Mentoring through Align Peoria Pilot (MAPP)
The College and Career Readiness Action Team is pleased to launch the Connecting Champions Pilot. This program provides mentors for students in fifth grade and for high school. Participants receive customized academic support and workforce development coaching. Specifically, mentors help students to develop a sense of hope and empowerment. Students will learn skills to create a positive future beyond high school and prepare for the world of work.
This pilot will employ three unique mentoring approaches to fulfill its goals:
1) A team of five to six adult mentors meeting with a group of fifteen middle school students on a weekly basis at two schools (Von Steuben and Lincoln);
2) One-to-one mentoring for fifteen adult mentors and fifteen middle school students meeting on a one-to-one basis at two schools;
3) One adult mentor supporting up to ten high school students in internship experiences. Mentors will be expected to commit one hour of time per week; develop supportive relationships with students; share life experiences; teach essential (soft/employability) skills; and encourage/reinforce academic, social/emotional, and career goals and successes. Mentors will receive training and ongoing support.
